GILLIG: Driving America Forward with Innovation and Excellence for Over 130 Years

GILLIG stands as a true American manufacturing icon and the leading manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses in the United States. With a rich history spanning over 130 years, our company has been at the forefront of transportation innovation, designing, building, and supporting the safest and most reliable transit buses on the road. Our commitment to quality, safety, and American-built excellence has made GILLIG the trusted partner for transit agencies across the nation, helping to connect communities, reduce congestion, and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Our state-of-the-art headquarters and manufacturing facility are located in Livermore, California, in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area's vibrant East Bay. This modern, 600,000-square-foot facility, opened in 2017, represents a new era of growth and innovation for GILLIG. It is here that our dedicated team of over 850 employees designs and manufactures a diverse portfolio of clean-energy propulsion systems, including battery-electric, hybrid, clean diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. Our products are not just vehicles; they are transformative solutions that improve the quality of life for millions of Americans every day.

The GILLIG story began in 1890 when Jacob Gillig, a skilled carriage builder, opened a small shop in San Francisco. Through resilience and a commitment to craftsmanship, the Gillig family rebuilt the business after the 1906 earthquake, shifting their focus to vehicle manufacturing. From the invention of the "California Top" in the 1910s to becoming a dominant force in school bus manufacturing for over 60 years, GILLIG has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt and innovate. Today, as a private company under the ownership of Henry Crown & Company, we continue this legacy of excellence, holding an impressive 31% market share in the North American heavy-duty transit bus industry.

A Diverse Portfolio of Clean-Energy Transit Solutions

GILLIG is at the forefront of the transition to sustainable transportation, offering a comprehensive portfolio of clean-energy transit solutions that meet the diverse needs of our customers. Our commitment to a greener future is reflected in our product lineup, which includes the most advanced and reliable zero-emission and low-emission buses on the market.

Our Battery Electric bus is a testament to our engineering prowess. Built on our proven Low Floor platform, this next-generation bus delivers unmatched performance, reliability, and safety. It features a direct-drive traction motor for smooth, quiet operation and is available with various battery capacities to meet different range requirements. We partner with industry leaders like Cummins to provide robust and reliable battery and charging solutions, ensuring our electric buses are a practical and sustainable choice for transit agencies.

The GILLIG Hybrid bus combines our proven Low Floor platform with the BAE Systems HDS200 hybrid drive system, offering significant fuel savings and emissions reductions. This parallel hybrid system allows for engine-off operation in designated zones, further reducing noise and pollution in sensitive urban areas. With thousands of GILLIG Hybrid buses in service across the country, we have a proven track record of delivering reliable and efficient hybrid solutions.

For agencies seeking ultra-low emission solutions, our Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses provide a clean and cost-effective option. Powered by the Cummins L9N engine, the cleanest natural gas engine available, our CNG buses offer near-zero NOx emissions. We have been a leader in CNG technology for over two decades, and our buses are known for their durability, reliability, and ease of maintenance.

Our Clean Diesel buses continue to set the standard for reliability and performance. Featuring the latest Cummins clean diesel engines, these buses meet the most stringent EPA emissions standards while offering exceptional fuel economy and low operating costs. The GILLIG Clean Diesel bus is a workhorse that transit agencies can depend on for years of reliable service.

State-of-the-Art Manufacturing and American-Built Quality

At GILLIG, we take immense pride in the fact that our buses are designed, engineered, and built entirely in America. Our Livermore facility is a showcase of modern manufacturing, combining advanced robotics and automation with the skilled craftsmanship of our dedicated team. This synergy allows us to produce buses of the highest quality, with a level of durability and reliability that is unmatched in the industry.

Our manufacturing process is vertically integrated, giving us control over every aspect of production, from initial design and engineering to final assembly and testing. We use only the highest quality materials and components, sourced from a network of trusted American suppliers. This commitment to quality is evident in every detail of our buses, from the robust stainless-steel chassis to the precision-crafted interiors.

Sustainability is a core principle of our manufacturing operations. Our Livermore facility features one of the largest rooftop solar installations in the San Francisco Bay Area, a three-megawatt system that offsets a significant portion of our energy consumption. We have also implemented numerous green manufacturing practices, such as bulk fluid dispensing, upgraded paint systems, and returnable packaging, to reduce waste and minimize our environmental impact. We are not just building cleaner buses; we are building them in a cleaner way.
